The Q-tip in the Cave Anxiety Trick

Q-tip in the cave anxiety trick, Ear Shenmen, Austin, TX

The Q-tip in the Cave Anxiety Trick Is Real — Here’s the TCM Truth

You’ve probably seen it making the rounds on social media — people swirling a Q-tip in the outer part of their ear, claiming it can melt away anxiety in seconds.
It might look like just another quirky TikTok trend, but here’s the thing: this “Q-tip in the cave” anxiety trick has deep roots in Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM).

We’ve been working with this exact spot for thousands of years. It’s called Shenmen — the Spirit Gate — and it’s one of the most calming points in the body. And if you’ve seen me at the clinic, I have likely needled this point on your ear, and have definitely applied ear seeds to this location.

What Is the Shenmen Ear Point?

Shenmen is located in the triangular fossa of the ear, just above the auditory canal.

In TCM, Shenmen is known for:

  • Calming the mind and reducing anxiety
  • Easing irritability and emotional overwhelm
  • Helping with insomnia and restless sleep
  • Reducing physical pain and tension

From a Western science perspective: stimulating Shenmen may activate the vagus nerve, the body’s “rest and digest” switch, helping lower heart rate, deepen breathing, and shift you out of fight-or-flight mode.  All of that from one little point on your ear – pretty cool, huh? 🙂

How to Do the ‘Q-tip in the Cave’ Anxiety Trick Safely

Important: Never insert a Q-tip into the ear canal. This technique is for the outer ear only.

  1. Hold a clean Q-tip and locate the small hollow in the upper inner part of your ear — this is the “cave.” (Not sure where this is located? Check the picture at the top of this article, and where the arrow is pointing is ear shenmen.)
  2. Gently swirl the Q-tip in a light, circular motion over that spot for 30–60 seconds.
  3. Breathe slowly — in through the nose, out through the mouth.
  4. Stop if you feel pain, dizziness, or discomfort.

💡 Pro tip: For longer-lasting results, use ear seeds on Shenmen — a service I offer at the clinic, for stress, anxiety, sleep, and fertility support.

When to Use the Shenmen Acupressure Point (or Q-Tip in the Cave Anxiety Trick)

Shenmen is a wonderful “first aid” point for stress. Try it:

  • Before bed to calm a racing mind
  • During a stressful workday
  • Before a big meeting or public speaking event
  • In the waiting room before a medical procedure or fertility appointment

Why Acupuncture Works Better for Lasting Calm

While Shenmen can provide quick relief, Traditional Chinese Medicine looks deeper than symptoms. Anxiety is often rooted in imbalances like:

  • Liver Qi stagnation (stress, tension, irritability, TMJ, neck and shoulder tension)
  • Heart Yin and/or Blood deficiency (restlessness, poor sleep, anxiety)
  • Kidney energy depletion (fear, burnout, exhaustion)

Acupressure is a great tool and helps in the moment — but acupuncture and herbal medicine address the root cause, giving you lasting calm instead of a quick fix.
